Wednesday Words

Karson has a new favorite saying...

"No way hose-kay!"

Translation - No way Jose.

He says it all. the. time.

Sort of cute in that oh so annoying kind of way.

Kamden is finally in his own room!  My nights are a little crazier, but that should get better with time.

Grandma Jane

Grandma Jane has been keeping us on our toes these last couple of weeks!

On the morning of Friday March 11, she called my mom at work and told her she had fallen a few times. Mom told Grandma to call her doctor and see what they wanted her to do. They made an appointment for her the following Monday.

That afternoon Mom was out of the office for a while without her phone. When she got back to work there were frantic phone calls from my Aunt Kris. Grandma had fallen a few more times. Mom wasn't answering her phone so she called Kris, who came and took her to the Emergency Room.

Grandma remained in the Charles City hospital Friday through Monday with no diagnosis. They set up an appointment with a neurologist in a couple of weeks.

I went to visit and check in on Grandma at her house on Tuesday and she was doing fine.

Thursday her beauty operator called me and told me Grandma was sick. She was worried about her and thought maybe I should go check on her. I called my Kris who said my aunt Kim was going to Grandmas that afternoon and she would check on her.

While all of this is going on my mom is in Arizona for the week and Kris and Kim left that night to go to Minneapolis for the weekend. Leaving me as the only person in the state to take care of Grandma.

On Friday, Grandma is still sick. I take off on my lunch hour to go get her some Pepto-Bismol, 7-Up, and try to get her to eat something.

When I get to her house she is back in her bedroom. I go get her up and she was able to walk to the front room. Which I thought was a really good sign. She didn't eat anything, but she drank 2 glasses of 7-Up. I called her doctor and asked if they wanted to see her or what we should do. They said to keep her hydrated.

Good. Great. Done. Check.

After work I picked the boys up and ran up to check on her again. Same thing again. Got out of bed, came to the front room, drank 7-Up, and chatted a minute.

Kris and Kim came home Saturday. So Kim checked on her on Saturday. Kris checked on her Sunday.

Mom got home Sunday morning so she went up to check on Grandma on Sunday night. That's when it really got interesting.

Mom tried to get Grandma to eat something. She took one bite and immediately projectile vomited it across the room. Mom decided that’s it, time for the Emergency Room. Luckily my dad was with her so they loaded her in to the car instead of calling an ambulance.

They got to the Emergency Room in Charles City and in a fairly short period of time it was determined that Grandma needed more help than they were able to give her. She was taken by ambulance to Mason City.

My mom called me on the way to Mason City, but I was already in bed (about 9:30). In hind sight it's a good thing I missed that call. I'm the only one that got any sleep that night.

When I listened to that message Monday morning I knew it wasn't good. I couldn't get ahold of my mom so I called my dad. He came home sometime in the night to get some rest, since he didn't really sleep Saturday night either since their flight home was overnight.

Grandma Jane had a completely blocked small intestine. She was in emergency surgery by 11:30. The surgeon didn't know what he was going to find, but only gave her a 50/50 chance of survival. Cue the tears.

I jumped in the shower took the kids to daycare and left with my dad for the hospital. At some point while I was getting ready Dad called me back and said she came out of surgery much, much better than anticipated. They removed a 12 inch section of her small intestine and she had a nasty infection similar to gangrene.

When we got to the hospital she was recovering in the Intensive Care Unit. When I saw her she looked amazing! Compared to how she looked on Friday it was like night and day. Gone was the sunken hollow look and dark red-purple eyes. She looked normal.

When she woke up the nurse asked her what her goal was. Her response, "To stay alive." She even flipped me off once so we knew she felt better. She was still a little confused on small details, but mostly her normal self.

Tuesday I headed back up to the hospital. I stopped at Grandma’s house on my way and picked up her make-up, calendar, a picture of her cats, all the things she deemed a necessity.

My uncle Mark flew in from California for a few days so we just watched Grandma sleep. Him on his laptop, me on mine. Then, she'd wake up for a little bit chit-chat and doze back off. She was much more with it now. She knew exactly what was going on and where she was.

About 4:00 pm Grandma Jane got moved to the regular surgery floor. A wonderful step in the right direction.

I haven't gotten an update yet today, but no news is good news. I'm taking Dustin and the boys up tonight to visit so we'll know more then. Thanks for all the prayers.

Living the life of a part-time stay-at-home-mom

Lately I've been becoming more and more frustrated with people who think because I stay home with the kids two days a week I have all the time in the world to deal with their problems.  Just because I'm not at work does not mean I'm free.

Do people forget what a pain in the ass it is to take two small children anywhere?  It's difficult when there are two adults, but when there's just one adult it's awful.  I mean, I do it because that's what mom's do, but it ain't easy.

Try going to the grocery store.  Karson has to walk or I have no where to put my groceries.  If Karson is walking that means I am constantly putting stuff back on the shelf, telling him to walk, yanking him out from in front of someones cart, begging, pleading, bribing with a sucker for him to just be good until we get out of the store.  It's exhausting.  Then, you have Kamden throwing a fit because he wants to walk too and there's no way that's happening for another year or two (five if I'm lucky).  I'm worn out just writing about it...

Then you have people asking you to do things that really aren't necessary for you to do.  Why is it my responsibility to make sure Grandma has her Christmas decorations up and then down?  Now, the Easter stuff needs to go up.  I don't even get my own decorations taken care of.  Is it really necessary for me to go deal with her stuff while keeping an eye on the boys in an extremely un-childproofed house with cat food and a litter box available for their delight?

I just don't get it.  Do I really seem to have my shit together well enough to start taking care of everyone else as well?

I'm just venting (obviously) because I feel like there's a few people that seem to think, "Oh, Lynsey's home she can do it."  They must forget that I have small children that must be looked after also.  Which is a job in and of it's self that no one quite understands until it is their job.

In the end, I will go and put up Grandma's Easter decorations.  That's what good Granddaughters do.  Will I do it with a smile on my face? Probably.  Will I bitch about it when I'm done.  Guaranteed.

3 Karson, 1 Kamden, 1 Dustin

Karson to me while making him macaroni and cheese - "Mom you're a good maker."

Only wish it would have been while a was making something that required a bit more talent, but I'll take it.

::

Karson was watching out the window waiting for Dustin to get home.  I heard a truck pull up and asked him if Dad was home.  He exclaims, "No, but Uncle Jade's here!"  I got up and hurried to the window to see what he was talking about.  Our neighbor boy recently shaved his head and had just gotten home and was walking to his house.

It was so stinkin' cute.

For those who don't know, my brother Jade is in the Army and has a shaved head.  He is deploying to Afghanistan in the next couple of weeks.  We've been talking about him more lately and even got to Skype with him the other day.  He must be on Karson's mind too.

::

I filled out Karson's preschool registration the other day.  I have to drop it off at the school this week.  I can't believe my baby is this big already.

::

Kamden has been doing awesome since his tubes got put in last week. He is saying more, or at least trying to say more. He is cutting 4 teeth right now so he has been whiiiiiiiiiney. Wow-za.

On the upside he pretty much slept through the night last night, which is super unusual. He slept from 8 pm till 5 am when my alarm went off and then he went back to sleep until 7. Sa-weet.

::
One of my first memories of Dustin is of him signing "Let Me Out" by Future Leaders of the World.  He's always liked the band, but we read somewhere that they split up.  Turns out they didn't.  We are going to their concert on Saturday at The Wheelhouse!

Bonus - Tickets are only $5.

That is all.

Myringotomies

Myringotomies, yes that is the technical term for ear tubes.  When we got the information sheet on the procedure Dustin kept saying my-ring-o-tone-ies (my ring tones) jokingly.

As you may have guessed, Kamden got tubes today.  We hit the ground running bright and early.

4:00 am - Got up, took a shower, rounded every body's things up.

4:50 am - Got the boys up and put in the van.

5:00 am - Dropped Karson off at daycare.

6:00 am - Arrived at hospital.

7:10 am - Kamden was in surgery.

7:20 am - Kamden was out of surgery and in recovery. Went and got a glass of hot chocolate and was being paged to go talk to the Doctor, I hadn't even sat down in the waiting room yet.

7:35 am - Kamden was out of recovery and back in the room.  He cried a little, but not much.

8:00 am - Kamden was running laps in the halls.  In the room, around the curtain, down the hall, and back again.

8:30 am - Start the check-out process.

8:40 am - In the van and on the road.

8:50 am - Kamden was doing so well we decided to stop at Lowe's for a couple of things.

9:30 am - Breakfast at McDonald's because we were starving.

10:30 am - Pick Karson up from daycare.

10:35 am - Back home. Business as usual.  Dustin goes to work and I get the kids settled in.

Dustin was amazed at how much you can get done before 10:00 am when you get up at 4:00.

Kamden did really well.  He was back to his normal self within a half an hour, which is awesome.  I'm so glad we decided to get tubes.  He's always been a happy kid and you could never tell when he had an ear infection, but I can already tell he fells better.
